archey's frog

Archey's frog is a tiny little frog who lives in the mountains of Coromandel Range. They are not like other frogs because the Archey's frog has an internal reproduction process. Other tadpoles need water to swim in. But Archey's frog doesn't.

Up in the mountains of Coromandel there are no streams or Lakes so where do the eggs go? Well the father makes some sort of liquid jelly substance so the eggs can survive. Then the father cares for the eggs by sitting on the liquid basket.

Then the eggs finally hatch into tadpoles still in the liquid basket. They go through every tadpole stage in the basket, they sometimes swim around in the basket but not too much. After a few months it gets too cramped in the basket so one of them has to come out.

Once they are out they start their new lives and all the signs of being a tadpole have gone so they could grow on. They are usually found under small rocks in the mountains of Coromandel and are the size of the fingernail.
